The Right to Live & Life!!

My lunch table discussions are getting interesting day by day. At times they get heated also, touching on sensitive subjects, subjects on which people have beliefs!!

Societical Laws, being nothing but the conditioning on which one has lived all his life. Laws that tell us do certain things in certain ways and not to other things. But, no-one has the sure understanding of these laws. Some arguments hide behind the context of culture. Yet culture is nothing but tradition, that happens because it has been happening.

Following something on mere beliefs, without reasons or logic. Everything need not be logic, but has to be reasonable.

As long as my actions are not affecting the other, I should be allowed to whatever I want to, again repeating, as long as they are not affecting others. I should not be forcing something on the other.

Everybody agrees on the above statement, but where people don’t agree, is the realm of ‘affecting others’ as this is very perspective.

Most of these decisions are arrived by majority of the current mindset of the people. For the majority is what is deemed as the society. But what about the people whose thoughts are not aligned with the thoughts of the majority.

In the previous days, they had two options, either to forcibly align there thoughts with the society or to move out of the society. The later being called a soceitical outcast. (This happens in present day also, but in groups of animals and not humans.)

For the present day human being, he has no option to go anywhere else. For the society has defined and covered, the whole planet earth in its range.

Now, the present day human, has to believe what the society in general believes, by force. But since the society is forcing me to do something, is it not violating my rights?

The overall mindset of the society being whatever is against it, is wrong. Anyone who questions the laws of the society is bordering on being wrong.

For sometime, my thoughts have been hovering around the subject of right and wrong defined by society or by majority. And everytime my thoughts venture in those directions, I always get reminded of the classic case of Galileo Galilei.

Is it always a fact that what ever the majority says is right?

Are we suppose to follow whatever EVERYONE decides, with no deviations?

If the mind is conditioned to think within a range, it will think within a range, within the boundaries in which you have defined it. I have discussed this before, in this post.

There is, actually, a lot lot more, but I guess your patience to read would have subsided along with my patience to write.

PS:The question of commonly believed societical notions, and there deviations have been greatly discussed in my favorite author, Doestovsky, prominently more so in his book “Crime & Punishment”

  1. For you what may be right I may not agree with them & vice-versa… people do try and force their mindset on you ( that’s the way our society is) but it is up to the person if you want to be influenced with it or not- listen to everyone present your own views on the right and wrong. I think we can deicide what is that we want to accept and what not and we do… Personally tell me one such instance where your life was influenced with any such belief or it was forced upon you (hard to come up with one, I am sure)…

These things do exist and sometimes no matter how educated/ ‘advanced’ we may be, it expected of us to just ‘accept certain things’- Do I? Honestly, yeah at times. Always- Never! I know how to prove my point and reason it out and sometimes I don’t even feel the need to do that…

Btw societal outcaste does exist even today and mind you it is not restricted to rural parts and yeah it happened to those who deviated and tried to break away from the societal moulds… At least, they attempted it for others to follow it too or try and break away from some other set of unwritten rules

  2. I agree with you ..sometimes people really try to impose their mindset to others just to prove that what they are doing is correct and set it as a standard .. who decided this- what is right and what is wrong?
Certainly we are free to follow what we want to believe but still in practical life sometimes we are bounded by some factors which we really cant ignore and cant raise our voice too ..just to tell them that this is what we feel -its not reasonable and I will not follow it.
But many times we have to do that forcefully because we have a fear that it can cost us a lot in a relationship-personal / professional.
So I feel it depends on the intensity of compromise asked for .If it is manageable then we don’t mind to follow it but if it is not reasonable and really affecting us then surely need to talk.
